I actually make my own and its pretty simple. Make them to size of the dog. About where the dog could be in there with two or three other dogs of the same size. Remember those pups are gonna grow up in it. If you can make it tall enough to keep the bitch in there, but make a side where you can slide the top part out and let her out but keep the pups in after they are walking around. This will allow you to let momma get a break and come and go as she pleases. Also around the inside of the box should be a board about the height of the bitch laying down and it should stick out a little more than an inch. This is for when momma dont realize she is crushing a pup up agaist the side. First time moms sometimes do this. The pup gets protected by the inside board.

Damn! You're good!!
Our first litter Mo didn't take to the box at all.. She picked a corner of one room and wouldn't give it up.. Luckily there was a window right next to her so we could watch with it open..(She wouldn't let me near her) Luckily no pups got smothered..
Second litter we misjudged the due date by a week.. Again this time in a closet and unfortunately we lost 4 of 12..
We set up a makeshift box for the Rot down the street, that one was similar to what you described above and worked out really well. (When mom gets tired of the pups it's kinda funny. She'll do anything to get out of their reach so a door is a necessity!)

I've heard of using a plastic pool with a foam noodle strapped around the sides. Can you not move the dog once they get started???

Mora would let Julie move her but if I stepped in the room she'd get angry.. I think the shelf is just a precaution since there is a lot of flopping around involved. Plus you can't be there all the time.

Mostly if you have a real good report with the dog you can move the pups and all. Noki actually had the first pup early in the morning in a crate and I was passed out hung over until the first one came! I was able to move it and her very easily into the box.

I almost think Mo was ashamed.. If I could have got a pic of the look she gave me before the get out growl.. After the fact she was fine with me. But both litters she did the same thing.
Oddly she has tried to kill my wife twice and just recently started treating her like a member of the family..

for our golden retriever, we built a plywood box, and put wood dowellsabout 2 1.2 inches up across the sides to protect the pups. It's not always just the birth you need to protect them, keep in mind ma gets tired with all that labor and will be down and out for a while. When she lays down if the pups don't have space to go, they could be smothered. That could also happen when she lays down to feed. i'd get you pictures of the whelping box we used (it was like 6 foor by 6 foot, about 1 1/2 feet tall) but it was ruined in a house fire 3 years ago.
