I wonder how hard it would be to train outside of a club. There are tons of books and videos on the sport.

Training outside one is easy if you have the right trainer. Unfortuneately Im still working on the people Im teaching to be helpers. Also when you do finally get your dog ready to compete your at the mercy most the time of someone elses club. They are most often biased(spelling).

I trial and train. I train mostly outside of clubs because of all the club politics, but you really do need a club to get anywhere, you simply have to have a great helper, and you can't be the helper for your own dogs if you want them to perform really well.

I agree with you there. Your dog should want to rip your arm off.

Of course if you look at my site, nearly all my Schutzhund pictures are of my dogs biting me, but it takes a special dog to let you work both ends, and you can't work them in defense or you risk huge pack problems. Personal Protection can never be done with you as the decoy.

I train my Dobe in Schutzhund in mid-Michigan. We have a club and I'm lucky to have a great helper.

I still train and trial for Schutzhund. I see no reason why a good dog can't trial in different dog sports or be certified for more than just one thing. My bitch, Lexus is ready for her BH now and my male Bentley is eat up with titles. He has his BH, Sch 2 ,CGC, CD, HIC, ASR-EL, ASR-1. He was high for his CD all three times with a score of 190, 190 and a 193 1/2 , high in Sch 2 and high in ASR-1. He is a National team obedience winner which we beat out all GSD in the U.S. and in Canada. This was done in 2001 in Perry Ga. at the AKC Nationals. My female Lexus is even better than him in obedience. Bentley is almost 10 yrs old so he is retired but he don't think he is. He is a large bone big male. He weights now at 96 pounds but has been up to 102 pounds. Very impressive dog.

I train in Schutzhund. I have trained outside of a club before, it was fun. We had an awesome helper, and there was only 3 of us, so there was more time to devote to each dog and we could train whenever.
The main thing, is having an awesome helper. If you have an awesome helper, you can train anywhere........anytime.

Good helpers /decoys are very hard to come by. We are blessed. Matt Hammond is our decoy director. He is very good but don't tell him I said that. He also is good at training not only dogs but also is a great decoy trainer. He took Jay, my son, and made him a very good decoy. Jay is my son but he has something that is God sent, he really knows how to read a dog. He knows what the dog is going to do before the dog does. Jay and Matt both are great training decoys as well as trial decoys. They are training another decoy, Mike Santana he too is on his way to becoming fantastic. Again I say we are blessed but not only with our decoys but with everyone in our club. Club training at it's best. I'm proud of them all.
See I knew you liked me.......:D

I know this is an older thread. But I trained in schutzhund as well. I prefer club training. I had a good helper and trained outside clubs as well. But I loved to watch other people train and learn from them as I went. Its hard to do that training on your own. I have seen good clubs and bad clubs, but politics is always there.
